Dominican Republic

Empowering young minds

Let’s meet Rafael Diaz, One World Care’s trusted on-the-ground volunteer in the Dominican Republic. His job is to make sure your donations are well spent in the poorest regions of the country.

Dominican Republic

For the Children

With a poverty rate of just over 40 percent, families in the Dominican Republic struggle to help their children receive the education they need to thrive. Often, parents struggle to afford even basic learning supplies (such as backpacks, writing utensils, and paper) for their children. One World Care gives pencils and notebooks to low-income families to help children reach their fullest potential during the academic year.

School supplies are not the only barrier to education, though. Although public schools provide lunch for students during the day, for many children, the only meal they eat is the food provided by the school. They often go hungry on weekends and school holidays, and struggle immensely to find food during summer break. One World Care gives packages with healthy, nutritious food to in-need families in both urban and rural areas.

Many parents in the Dominican Republic are working full-time to provide the basic necessities for their families, which leaves little time to help their children with schoolwork. Additionally, the public and school libraries are vastly underfunded, and many of the books are often damaged and illegible. To incentivize reading, One World Care provides new, age-appropriate books to children in primary schools.

The joy on parents’ faces as they see their child eat a healthy meal, read a book to their family, or practice homework at the kitchen table, is priceless. The change One World Care is making in the lives of children around the world is only possible with your support. Donate today to help transform a child’s life.
