With a poverty rate of just over 40 percent, families in the Dominican Republic struggle to help their children receive the education they need to thrive. Often, parents struggle to afford even basic learning supplies (such as backpacks, writing utensils, and paper) for their children. School supplies are not the only barrier to education, though. Although public schools provide lunch for students during the day, for many children, the only meal they eat is the food provided by the school. They often go hungry on weekends and school holidays, and struggle immensely to find food during summer break. Many parents in the Dominican Republic are working full-time to provide the basic necessities for their families, which leaves little time to help their children with schoolwork.
